SILICONES, POLYURETHANES, CLEANERS, ADHESIVES

On a chemical basis, sealants are divided into several types: acrylic, silicone, bitumen, polyurethane.

Silicone is a mixed organic-inorganic polymer material (rubber) with the chemical formula [R2SiO]n, where R is an organic group such as methyl, ethyl or phenyl. It may seem strange to you, but flexible and soft silicone construction sealant is made from a strong material - silicon, which occurs in the form of quartz or sand. Polymers are made from it, which are included in the composition of silicone. Silicones have a liquid, jelly-like or solid consistency, with a variety of applications. In construction and engineering, they are popular as adhesives, lubricants or insulating compounds. Covering with this material protects the surface from the effects of harmful substances and from the penetration of moisture.

Polyurethane is a polymer (polyester) that is produced from isoamines and alcohols. Polyurethane coatings and adhesives in many cases are obtained from isocyanates, which are mixed with another component - various compounds with an active hydrogen atom, epoxy resins or their derivatives with amines. It uses the quality of the mixture to expand repeatedly with a controllable delay.

It is used in the form of soft to very hard foam as thermal insulation and adhesives in construction, for the production of machine parts, as a coating (makes fighter planes practically invisible to radar), etc. Sealing is the main purpose of polyurethane foam. Its sealing effect is particularly useful for filling holes and voids in concrete, plasterboard and masonry. Thermal insulation - the properties of polyurethane foam are due to its low thermal conductivity (from 0.019 W / m K. to 0.023 W / m K.). For example, a layer of polyurethane foam 2.5 cm thick has thermal conductivity identical to a wooden beam 19 cm thick or a brick wall half a meter thick. Soundproofing- As mentioned above, after hardening, the mounting foam is a porous material. Pores are cells isolated from each other and filled with air. Such a structure is a stable and effective barrier to a sound wave. Mounting properties of the foam are used to fasten and fix structures made of metal, wood and PVC. For example, when installing windows or for additional fixing of water pipes.
