PRIMERS

Priming the foundations is an important part of projects related to the application of paints, cladding, flooring, hydro- and thermal insulation. Primers are specially designed compositions that adhere to various types of surfaces, making them stronger and smoother. Thus, the bases absorb less paint or glue, and their adhesion to the surface of the next layer is improved. The use of a primer between the surface and the finishing material creates a special microfilm that increases the strength of the coating, preserves it and makes it waterproof.

The modern industry of construction chemicals offers primers with the most diverse application - to strengthen old bases, deep penetrating, to improve adhesion (adhesion), insulating, anti-corrosion and others. Priming is actively used both in facade work and in interior painting, as well as in the protection of various structures and equipment, predetermining the quality of the final coating. For each specific case, an individual decision is needed on which primer composition to choose, depending on the surface, the conditions of application and operation, the desired effects and the properties of the finishing coating - paints, enamels, plasters, insulations or other types of linings.

Water dispersion primers can be strengthening and impregnating. They differ in the particle size of the binder. The interaction with the processed material depends on this. Impregnating primers have particles 8-10 times smaller than those in curing primers, and therefore more easily pass through the micropores and capillaries of the materials. Thus, deep-penetrating primers impregnate the base to a depth of about 5mm, while strengthening primers work only with the upper layers of the surface.

Some types of surfaces and materials can predetermine various defects that appear subsequently, after the finish coating has already been applied. To prevent this from happening, a correct choice of primer composition is necessary. It can be a water-soluble primer or a primer based on organic solvents. Primers with organic solvents help to solve problems with critical surfaces, for example with insufficiently stable connection between base and plaster or with highly absorbent surfaces. They also prevent the formation of salt spots, binding the salts that would otherwise separate on the surface of the facade. In interior finishing works, priming with compounds with organic solvents is particularly effective when it comes to leveling and strengthening walls and ceilings and before pasting wallpaper. If the walls are sheathed with plasterboard sheets, then before the interior painting, a primer will have to be applied, which will bind the water-soluble substances in the plasterboard and thus reduce the absorption capacity of the surface to a minimum. For this purpose, it is best to use water-soluble primers. When priming new plasterboard surfaces, this helps to seal the wall to prevent mold growth.

Primers can also be tinted with pigments and clear. Tinted primers, in addition to the necessary base, provide breathability, i.e. allow surfaces to "breathe". Another of their advantages is that they form a primary color layer before placing the finishing coating.

A key tip is to choose primers and topcoats on the same base. Most manufacturers offer systems of products from the same brand that are applied sequentially. This ensures their compatibility.
