Paint roller

Paint rollers are one of the most common painting tools, both for home and professional use. Working with a paint roller is not as precise as with a brush, but on the other hand it is much faster, efficient and with lower paint consumption. Rollers are used to paint relatively large surfaces with a wide variety of characteristics- from rough and uneven (such as external plasters and facade areas) to smooth and even perfectly smooth surfaces (such as the finest gypsum plasters pre-treated with a special primer).

Rollers are also different according to the type of textile. The most common are acrylic rollers, because they are suitable for almost any job, there are also rollers made of natural materials (e.g. sheep's wool, goat fur and other products of animal origin), polyamide, synthetic and semi-synthetic materials, as well as special rollers for effects. Generally speaking, "any roller can do anything", but really good results come when the type of roller is chosen according to its purpose and the desired end result. Here are briefly the most important points of the conditional division, according to the type of paints:

Acrylic rollers- all types of latex, water-based paints and varnishes. A versatile and durable tool. Suitable for both hobby and professional use. "Kalashnikov" at the painting tools.

Polyamide Rollers - an excellent material of a higher class, but with a visible difference from acrylic only and only in the hands of real professionals. More expensive compared to acrylic rollers.

Mohair Rollers- There are two types- 100% natural and semi-natural. Use- for varnishes and light paints. Semi-natural, which consists of 50% goat hair and 50% acrylic is the better option, as this mix is ​​more resistant to washing solvents than pure 100% goat hair.

Woolen Rollers- Varnishes and Bliss Dyes. It goes with everything, but still- varnishes and bland paints. Highest price class.

Nylon Rollers- two-component and polyurethane paints, epoxy resins and any ultra-aggressive solutions containing thinners, coresilin, etc. Suitable for waterproofing coatings and yacht varnishes that would normally destroy any other roller in minutes.

Foam Rollers- gentle paints and varnishes. This type of roller has a special variety called "Flock" which is more durable than a regular disposable foam roller. Due to its low quality and too short life, mohair rollers are being replaced more and more.

Painter's rollers are divided into two main types according to their structure and method of production.

Stitched roller

The first type is the stitched rollers with a polyurethane backing, designed primarily for rough and uneven surfaces. The pad federates and softens the "hard-to-hard" contact between the wall and the plastic roller. Thus, the softened surface of the roller has a significantly improved covering ability for uneven surfaces, with the fibers of the textile reaching in depth to all holes and irregularities. Rollers of this type are made by placing the backing on the plastic roll (core) and then sewing a homogenous piece of textile onto it. This type of rollers are very strong and resistant to long working cycles, and for this reason they are widely distributed. It can be said that they come closest to the idea of ​​the "Universal tool", which can be used to do any painting job and to paint thousands of square meters of area.

Glued Rollers

The second type is the glued rollers, in which the federating pad is missing, since they are designed for working with semi-smooth and smooth surfaces. With these rollers, by means of various technologies, the textile is glued directly onto the roller. In contrast to the sewn rollers, whose textile has a longer fiber length (18-25mm), in the glued ones the fiber length is significantly shorter (10-12mm). This also determines the following type of division for paint rollers:

The long fiber is used for uneven and rough surfaces, facades, porous materials, etc. Raw surfaces that are expected to absorb more paint.

The short fiber is used for semi-smooth and smooth surfaces with less absorption capacity, where it is not necessary for the roller to "lift" more paint, but rather the effect of uniform painting and artistic finish is sought. Rollers with short fibers are entirely for interior use on plaster and all plastered surfaces, various smooth materials, etc.
