DECORATIVE PLASTERS
Facade plasters, like most exterior and interior paints and other coatings, belong to the so-called protective and decorative coatings. This means that they must not only give the building an aesthetic appearance, but also limit the impact of the external environment's destructive factors as much as possible. Very often the facades bear the marks of weathering, biological effects, as well as industrial and urban pollution of the environment. The characteristics of the selected coating must provide an adequate response to the specific conditions under which the coating will be operated, so as to avoid undesirable effects. In many cases, due to the decorative effects of some exterior plasters, they are also used as interior plasters due to the interesting effects with which they can be upgraded, as well as their greater resistance.
In terms of adhesion, elasticity and resistance to mechanical deformation, plasters based on high-quality acrylic polymers have no competition. But they are inferior to mineral ones in terms of vapor permeability and, in addition, they are combustible, which is why some restrictions are imposed on their use in places where high heating is possible.
Facade silicate plasters, based on "liquid" glass, are available as a ready-to-use mixture and can be applied to all types of mineral bases, as well as on old, properly treated silicate coatings. They are characterized by very high vapor permeability, but in terms of their decorative qualities, it should be mentioned that the color range is limited. Silicate plasters are always used after priming with a silicate primer.
Silicone plasters have the longest service life, excellent vapor permeability and, at the same time, water-repellent properties, as well as resistance to pollution. Therefore, it is recommended to apply it in responsible projects, as well as in the restoration of buildings. They are applied on all types of mineral bases and on old dispersed coatings, requiring preliminary treatment of the base with silicone primers.
An interesting variety of silicone plasters are siloxane - based on silicone polymers containing silicon hydride. They are characterized by very good water-repellent properties and high atmospheric and UV resistance. A unique property of siloxane is to destroy traces of organic pollutants on its surface.
With the improvement of production technologies, the offer of combined types of plasters, which use as a basis two or more of the listed materials, and the result is optimization of the properties of the finished product. Examples of such are silicone-silicate and silicone-acrylate plasters.
